2004 / 2005 Review

Woodley Sports F.C. Youth Team played their first League game of the Season on Sunday at Eagley F.C. in Bolton. The Youth team are entered in the North West Allied Trophies League Premier Division, which covers the North West of England, and includes Youth teams from top Semi-Professional Clubs such as Altrincham, Marine, Lancaster City and Leigh RMI. The game ended 2-2 with Woodley unlucky not to take all 3 points. With a good team performance in a highly competitive game, match officials and home officials agreed Woodley had played the better football, goals from Senogles and Marsden appeared to be enough to ensure Woodley’s first game in this campaign was a success, but an equaliser 2 minutes from time meant the points would be shared.

Woodley Sports Youth 2 Altrincham Youth 2

In a classic game of 2 halves Woodley’s young side found themselves 2-0 down at half-time to reigning north-west alliance league champions Altrincham. The visitors dominated midfield in the early stages but the introduction of Craig Pennington into the Woodley midfield at the break ensured Woodley were on top for the second half. A blistering free kick from Caine Smith, followed by a quality strike from Mike Lambert outside the area enabled the home side to deservedly share the points!

WOODLEY SPORTS YOUTH 6 – NANTWICH TOWN 1

Woodley’s second cup tie of the week produced the identical score line. The young Steelmen reached the quarter finals of the Cheshire County Cup against a previously unbeaten Nantwich side.

Kane Smith was brought down in the box allowing J Rourke to convert from the spot, Kane Smith then grabbed 2 goals and a Danny Carter lob gave the home team a 4-1 half time lead.

Woodley added 2 further goals from Stuart Hynes and man of the match Matt Teasdale completed the scoring

Barrow AFC 1 – Woodley Sports Youth Team 3

Woodley made the long journey to the Lake District on Sunday and were rewarded with a fine victory.  Barrow had an unbeaten home record, playing on a pitch hugging the coastline at Askam-In-Furness; the strong sea breeze was to play a major part in the game. Woodley played with the wind in the first half, and dominated, Michael Atherton struck twice, to provide the visitors with a deserved 2-0 lead, the highlight of the first half though was a “wonder” strike from Danny Carter, from fully 40 yards which cannoned off the crossbar. Predictably, Barrow pressed hard in the second half, pumping the ball forward at every opportunity, eventually pulling a goal back when keeper Maidment was deceived by the wind.  The game was finished in the dying minutes when Atherton raced through to complete a fine hat-trick.

WOODLEY SPORTS YOUTH 6 – LEIGH RMI 1

Woodley eased into the semi final of the Allied Trophies Premier cup with a comprehensive victory.

With the Steelmen playing the better first half football against a Leigh RMI side boasting 7 Lancashire County players a Kane Smith strike separated the two teams.

The second period was dominated by clinical Woodley finishing, Smith bagged his second and four goals by substitutes D Carter (2) & M Atherton (2) rounded an excellent performance against a highly league placed side

Halton FC 0 V Woodley Sports Youth 1

16th January 2005.

Woodley Youth travelled to Runcorn on Sunday. A strong Halton team proved worthy of extra time as the game ended 0-0. Woodley had the better chances of the game on an very heavy pitch & with a strong wind, the Steelmen hitting the bar 3 times, and a goal similar to the 1966 World cup final ruled out. Fitness and a great 25 yard strike from substitute Michael Atherton Saw Woodley eventually break the deadlock, 7 minutes into extra time. With the wind behind them Halton pushed for an equaliser but strong determined defending and fine keeping kept the score 1-0.

Euxton Villa 2 - Woodley Sports Youth   4

In the 1st Round of the Premier Division Cup, Woodley Sports proved worthy winners, playing some excellent football particularly in the first half, honours were even at the break after Phil Woodbridge scored with a strong header from a corner. In the second period Woodley proved too strong and moved into a comfortable 4-1 lead, with goals from Ben Senogles, an o.g. and a stunning free kick from Stuart Hynes. Despite a late Euxton goal, Woodley eased into the next round. Woodley are next in action on the Wirral, October 3rd in the Cheshire Cup.

Woodley Sports are through to the next round of the Cheshire Cup, after squeezing past Shaftsbury of Birkenhead 5-4 after extra time. A game littered with injuries for Woodley, looked set to go to the Home team, until a dubious last minute penalty decision let Woodley back in to the game. A late Mark Haslam winner saw the young Steelmen through to the 2nd Round. Woodley's next fixture is at home to Barrow A.F.C October 17th 2.00 p.m. Kick off.

Woodley Sports Youth suffered their first defeat in the North West Alliance League, going down 2-1 to First Touch Halewood, of Liverpool competitive first half ended goalless, with both teams threatening in front of goal, Halewood squandering two good chances and Woodley hitting the woodwork through the impressive Michael Atherton.15mins into the second half Woodley were 2-0 down, the second goal coming from the penalty spot, from an obvious penalty decision. With attack know the only option Woodley pressed forward for the rest of the game.  With 20mins left in the game John Rourke converted a Woodley penalty, the game now swung Woodley’s way, a Caine Smith free-kick hit the woodwork, constant pressure followed but Halewood held out to ensure the home side took all 3 points. Craig Pennington was again outstanding in midfield for the Steelmen.

Woodley Sports Youth 5    Morecambe “B” 1

Woodley opened their 2005 account with a fine victory over the Morecambe Youth Academy “B” team, in this Alliance Open Cup game. Ben Senogles began the scoring inside 10 minutes, finishing strongly inside the area. Adam Marsden raced through to calmly slot home the second 15 minutes later, Ryan Maidment then pulled off an excellent save to keep Woodley on top. Minutes later Danny Shannon capped an excellent first half for the home side with a great individual goal weaving through the Morecambe defence to ease the ball home. The second half didn’t produce the quality of football seen earlier in the game, several Woodley injuries’ forcing changes and unsettling the play. Despite this, Woodley always looked dangerous, and Danny Carter added a fourth goal that was always likely. This prompted a Morecambe response; a scramble in the home area from a corner saw the visitors pull a goal back. Any hopes of a comeback though were quickly ended as Mark Haslam scored the goal of the game lifting the ball over the Morecambe keeper to make it 5-1. Man of the match for Woodley was Gary Gee, working very hard to control the midfield. The young Steelmen travel to Runcorn next week to compete for a Cheshire Cup semi-final spot
