YOUTH TEAM REPORT- OCTOBER 2005 The last month has seen Woodley’s U18 team; represent Stockport District FA, in the defence of the Annual Cheshire District Challenge Youth Cup! The competition is played on a mini league basis, with the nine districts of Cheshire split into two Leagues. Stockport was drawn in league “B”, along with Crewe, Macclesfield and Mid Cheshire DFA. In the opening fixture, home to Crewe, Stockport produced an excellent performance, playing good passing football, and winning the game comfortably 3-0, goals coming from Mark Haslam, Stuart Hynes and James Quinn.
The second fixture at Mid Cheshire was a completely different story, in arguably the lad’s worse performance of the season to date, Ryan Maidment in the Stockport goal, kept his team in the match, with several fine saves, goals from Michael Atherton and James Quinn, enough to take a point in an improved second half.
The final game provided an identical situation to last season’s competition, an away point at Macclesfield would be enough to put Stockport into the final again. A James Quinn goal put Stockport ahead, but Macclesfield pressed hard, and were rewarded with an equaliser, again not producing their best, Stockport were strong enough to book a place in the final next March. Stockport District remain undefeated in their last 9 competitive games, and face a tough challenge against Altrincham in the final to extend that run to double figures!
